The Equestrian Edit: 10 Classic Equestrian Fall Outfits for Women

Of all the different branches of classic style, equestrian-inspired dressing has always been one of my favorites.

I grew up in the country and around horses, so there’s something especially familiar to me about riding boots, quilted layers, tweed jackets, rich brown leather, and all of those traditional pieces that feel right at home both in the barn and beyond it. Even though I’m not dressing for riding these days, I still find myself drawn to that same timeless, slightly rugged-but-polished look every fall.

For this edit, I took inspiration from Ralph Lauren, traditional British countryside style, and classic equestrian dressing. In this edit, you’ll see Barbour jackets, plaid and herringbone, cable knits, tailored blazers, loafers, riding boots, and plenty of cognac and chocolate-brown leather.

What I love most about this style is that it isn’t particularly trend-driven. Most of the pieces in these outfits could have been worn years ago and will still feel just as relevant years from now. And you certainly don’t need to ride horses to wear them. The key is borrowing those heritage-inspired elements and mixing them with the everyday pieces already in your wardrobe.

I originally created The Equestrian as one of the four results for my Fall Style Quiz, but I had so much fun with this particular aesthetic that five outfits simply weren’t enough. So I added five completely new looks for the blog, bringing the full edit to 10 classic fall outfits.

What Makes an Outfit Feel Equestrian?

You don’t have to dress like you’re headed to a horse show. For everyday wear, I think equestrian style is really about a mix of traditional tailoring, practical country pieces, natural textures, and rich autumnal colors.

Throughout these looks, you’ll see lots of cream, camel, chocolate brown, navy, olive, and denim, along with riding-inspired details like leather boots, horsebit loafers, structured bags, plaid, quilted outerwear, and classic gold jewelry.

The result feels polished, but never overly precious—which is probably why I come back to it year after year.

Building an Equestrian-Inspired Fall Wardrobe

One of the things I love about these ten outfits is how much overlap there is between them. You really don’t need a completely separate “equestrian wardrobe” to get the look.

A great pair of jeans, an ivory knit, a tailored blazer, a classic coat or field jacket, and a few beautiful brown leather accessories can take you surprisingly far. From there, pieces like a plaid trouser, cable-knit sweater, silk scarf, quilted vest, or riding boot add more of that countryside influence.

And because so many of these pieces are rooted in traditional menswear, riding clothes, and British country dressing, they tend to have much more staying power than something bought purely because it’s having a moment.

That’s really what I want my wardrobe to be built around anyway: pieces I genuinely love, that work together, and that I’ll still want to wear several falls from now.
